Have you ever been to a seminar or show featuring a hypnotist? If you have you probably remember the hypnotist having members of the audience up on the stage doing all kinds of funny things. I remember seeing a show once where a man was hypnotized into believing he was a human seat belt. Every time a certain word was said by the hypnotist it triggered the man to leap across the people sitting next to him as if he were actually a seat belt.
What caused those people to do all those funny things? Believe it or not they were hypnotized. Let me clarify some things before you think I'm a little weird. All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. The people on the stage agreed to set aside their conscious mind and allowed the hypnotist to access their sub-conscious mind. Your sub-conscious is like the hard drive on your computer. You give it commands and it follows them without judgment.
I only mentioned hypnotism to you because the Spanish learning tip I want to share with you requires a leap of faith. You have to be willing to set aside your conscious mind and allow access straight to your super computer sub-conscious in order for this technique to be successful.
Here is the technique that I want to recommend to you. You should read three or four blockbuster novels in Spanish even if your Spanish is still at a beginner's level. You want to read books that are simple and have a lot of words in them like John Grisham's and Tom Clancy's books. Even popular books like Harry Potter and The Davinci Code are excellent choices. Read the book in English first and then read it in Spanish. I have found popular books translated into Spanish at my local library and on Amazon.com.
I don't recommend that you use a dictionary. It will only slow you down and you'll give up before you even get to the second chapter. Your goal is to read the entire book even if you don't understand anything. If by the end of the book you understand the general plot than you have done well. After a while you'll find yourself using words, phrases, and grammar that you had no idea you knew. All thanks to those books you read when you understood almost nothing.
By doing this you have allowed your sub-conscious mind to digest tons of vocabulary and grammatical structures and you've seen them used correctly over and over again in many different contexts. At first you may feel like your wasting your time but you're not. It is crucial that you don't quit. By the time you've read a couple of books you'll suddenly become more confident with your ability to understand Spanish and you'll be ready to tackle different and more complex aspects of the Spanish language.
