Advantages of Spanish Language Immersion Programs
|
One of the most popular trends in recent years when it comes to learning a foreign language is immersion programs. If you aren’t familiar with what an immersion program is, it is a method of learning a foreign language the same way that you have learned your native tongue, by immersing yourself in it completely and living it each and every day. On the surface, an immersion program can be a bit scary, especially if you are starting from square one and you don’t have a foundation to build on, however, many people find that immersion programs help you learn much faster since you not only absorb the words of a language but also the culture, the people and every other aspect, as well. If you are thinking about Spanish language immersion programs for you or for your children, here is a basic primer.
There are many different types of Spanish language immersion programs, many of which take place in a Spanish speaking country. At the very least, Spanish language immersion programs require you to not just have classroom instruction in Spanish, but require you to live in Spanish. You will likely be boarded with a Spanish speaking family and you will live as authentic of a Spanish life as possible. Since you will be able to see and hear Spanish being spoken on a conversational level, instead of a formal, textbook style, many people feel that they learn a more “authentic” style of Spanish than they could any other way.
Many people take on the challenge of Spanish language immersion programs simply to learn about the culture primarily, and the language as a secondary concern. Granted, there can be a high cost to attending these types of programs, especially if they require your placement abroad, but they present a once in a lifetime opportunity to not only learn a foreign language but to embrace a foreign culture, as well.
Interestingly enough, there are so many Spanish language immersion programs dotted around the globe, you can pick on based on what you want to learn, how much you want to spend and what your long term goals are. Since Spanish is so widely spoken, you can attend affordable Spanish language immersion programs in places like Guatemala, or if you want a more traditional immersion experience, you can head to Spain or even parts of Argentina or Mexico. Essentially, most South American countries offer immersion programs and schools you can attend, with each one offering its own unique attraction, whether it be nature, a bustling metropolis or classic, European ambiance.
If you don’t think you’ll have enough time or enough financial resources to go away for months on end to another country, there are Spanish language immersion programs that offer a week or two week programs, but you’ll have to check with that particular school. Even if you only have enough time for a vacation, broadening your horizons with a Spanish language immersion program is an incredible way to get away from it all and come back a better person.
