Rosetta Stone Spanish Review:
Summary:
Rosetta stone is a software only course which uses image-audio and image-text association without any English references. Although, this is an interesting and maybe somewhat effective method to teach a language, some of you may have trouble adapting with this method because there is no reference material if you get lost. Also, this course is much more expensive than the other courses that we've reviewed - their level 1 course alone (they have 3 total) costs more than twice the amount of our number 1 ranked course - Rocket Spanish, and Rocket Spanish covers more material.
Appropriate for:
-Beginner (Level 1)
What you get:
- Software with 92 integrated lessons (Level 1)
Course details:
Rosetta Stone revolves around the concept of using images, audio, and text association to forcefully 'immerse' you in the Spanish language. Rosetta stone uses no english to associate with Spanish words, only images. The idea is to relate intuitively with the images then associate the images to Spanish words and phrases. The software is easy to install and use, it is simply a matter of running the program, reading or hearing a word or phrase then choosing the correct image (or filling in the correct blank). There are different modes of image interaction - Delay, Timer, and Test, which are basically different ways of interacting with the same information. There are also interactive writing excercises to help you learn and improve your Spanish writing skills. One useful feature is the ability to track your progresss by reinforcing your strengths and allowing you to revisit your weaknesses. However, because there are no traditional grammar lessons as it relates to English within this course, you may find it difficult to fully adapt within the Spanish language. This course may be good for those of you who want to learn Spanish purely by software and would like to try learning Spanish in a non-traditional, 'non-lesson-based' way.
The main problems that we have with the Rosetta Stone course are 1: We feel that is over-priced - their level 1 course alone costs more than twice the amount of our number 1 ranked course - Rocket Spanish, and Rocket Spanish covers more material. And 2: There is no portability to this course - you must be in front of a computer the entire time - you cannot, for example take a CD audio lesson into your car, or use your MP3 player or iPod with this course |
